I was quite shocked to come home today and find that my Jack Dempsey Cichlid, Ham, had died. He was almost 5 years old and quite the spectacular fish. I'm not 100% sure why he died but it may have been caused by the new filter I bought which may have caused the tank to cycle. I tested the water and while ammonia and nitrate levels were low, nitrite levels were a bit above where they should be.
It's a little strange because Ham has had no problems with being in a cycling tank before. Hell, he's been through seven moves in his life, each time cycling the tank himself. I guess this time was too much. I noticed a few days ago he started twitching a little. Then two days ago he got pale (yes, fish can get pale) and this morning he was looking a little better.
RIP Ham
